JOBS PAGE

OK, So Maybe Jobs is a bit of an exageration because we don't pay. BUT we need your help. The following positions are availible and in return you get the following benefits:

  • Use the office with it's amazing computer and other broken technology facilities.
  • Be part of the collective that runs one of the most respected cinemas in the UK (seriously!).
  • Use our digital filmmaking equipment and film bees 16mm equipment.
  • Watch loads of movies for free, hang out with film loving people.
  • Have a positive role in the community and work with a group looking to offer a social alternative.

CONTEXT: We are currently in a transitional phase - we are changing venue to a building we must refit. Side Cinema (or whatever we decide to call the new place) will become a bigger, more expensive and more labour intensive project but we are determined to keep it grassroots and beautiful. In order to make this possible and to bring in new blood we are changing our organisation structure from an unincorporated group (read the old constitution) to a Social Welfare Company Limited by Garantee; this means the commitee are no longer personally financially liable for the project. We are also changing the commitee structure to ressemble a traditional social club with members elected to be responsible for certain key roles; this will hopefully open the organisation up to more people, ensure the cinemas survival if the current volunteers should leave and make cinema programing accessible to outside groups.

We also need volunteers who do not sit on the commitee (unless they want to) but do work which is vital for the day to day sucess fo the cinema.

Some of the roles below

You'll notice that there is no cinema 'programmer' role. This is because it is something we hope anyone can be involved with.autonomous programmers can be given the space but they must ensure the rest pays for itself.

Commitee Roles (elected board members with specific administrative roles) Commitee members must attend committee meetings that happen every 2 weeks. The work load varies according to what is going on and according to the cinema cycle. the committee member is not expected to do everything themselves and they can of course dabble in other areas (such as programming) but they are responsible for the smooth running of that part of the organisation.

  • 'Secretary:' maintains communication systems between active volunteers. collates minutes and
  • 'Treasurer:' oversees financial matters and relationships with funders, works closely with the book keeper.
  • 'Audience Development:' sees the brochure through from text to distribution and looks after other marketing, press releases etc.
  • 'Content Development:' co-ordinates the programme, runs private hires and works with people who want to put on events.
  • 'Technical facilitator:' expands the ability of active volunteers to use our equipment.

Unelected roles (more talent less talk) Unelected roles require the same (or sometimes greater) level of commitment as the committee but do not need to be elected because their skills are above the vaguearies of democracy.

  • 'Bar Manager:' The new building will have a small, mostly quiet bar. The manager is a crucial role keeping the bar staffed, stocked, and hopefully in profit.
  • 'Webmaster and computer genius:' Run the website in such a way that content/pages can be made by as many people as possible. Keep the office network and our tired computers happy and running

Always Wanted some jobs just need doing as soon as the cinema opens. Fun, helpful, good experience and less commitment.

  • 'Ushers/Bar Staff:' Sell sweets and tickets and drinks at the bar, cash up etc, looks good, see films for free.
  • 'Distributors:' If there is somewhere you can put up posters or drop flyers near you or if you're prepared to dash round one afternoon a fortnight publicity is always something that needs doing more. WHAT WOULD PEOPLE GET IN RETURN?
  • 'Projectionists and technicians:' Being a projectionist is like being a midwife in reverse - you gently introduce people to the womb-like dreamworld of the movie. And you get to be really geeky about cool machines. There are always other thing to fix and maintain to a proper and safe standard.
  • 'Artists and creatives:' Hopefully this includes everyone, to decorate the building and proactivly make the cinema an exciting place. Also to make posters, paint boards and comeup with ideas.

On Call we would love to have friends in the following proffessions to call on if and when we needed them. You probably already know who you are.

  • 'Solicitor, accountant, engineer, builder, plumber, electrician'
