STAR AND SHADOW CINEMA COMMUNITY BUILDING PROJECT.
1. Who and what is Star and Shadow Cinema?
Star and Shadow Cinema is a voluntary organisation, a new community interest company, with social aims to develop community participation in the culture (specifically film) that is presented in Newcastle-Gateshead. Currently, our organisation has 52 members, 214 volunteers on our email database, and a wide audience that spans the whole region. Our organisation is the next step for the group that successfully revived the Side Cinema on Newcastles Quayside over the last four and a half years. Our overall aim is to run a participatory cinema where the audience feels the ownership and confidence to create their own bespoke film culture. Through this programme we aim to develop a stronger understanding of film as an art form/means of communication and as a social experience. Part of that aim is to carry on our successful programme from the Side Cinema, providing a platform for the many genres of film that do not get the exposure they deserve, from multi-cultural cinema (non-English language film), documentaries, to experimental film, lesbian and gay film culture, films obscured by history and local filmmakers. Our track record has seen us working with a number of partners including Equal Arts, Baltic, Sage Gateshead, Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle and Northumbria Universities, Northern Architecture, Pride Festival, Holocaust Memorial Day, and many others. We have provided a resource for countless community projects and amateur/ early career filmmakers to screen their work, and a place to represent the many cultures that make up the Newcastle-Gateshead communities, from Byker to Bangladesh, Jarrow to Japan.
2. What is this project about?
The project we are applying to you to support is the capital expenditure of renovating the old Tyne Tees TV set building warehouse into a fully accessible community cinema. Our approach is very out of the ordinary. This redevelopment is a community building project, whereby the work is carried out by skilled volunteers passing on skills to untrained volunteers. The building we are rennovating was a disused warehouse. Our motivation was to create a fantastic community resource, in a way that did not decimate the public purse, and felt owned by the community that built it, in the hope that they might become potential programmers of the building. The Star and Shadow Cinema is whatever its audience wants it to be. We have had an enormous response, and people are queueing up to programme things they want to see. The building work is 75% complete: we have transformed one workshop space into a very atmospheric cafe/bar. We have built a cinema auditorium in another space, including insulated walls, ceiling and a raked seating structure. We have created a light office and workshop space in a third area, and we have completed a fully accessible toilet block as well. Everything except the electrical installation and toilet block has been done by volunteers, and over 100 have offered their help in the last 3 months. This gives us enormous confidence that this building is genuinely desired by our regional communities. We now just need to install some crucial services to ensure our building meets all the standards required of a public building, concerning accessibility, environmental standards, health and safety and comfort. In particular, we need to install a heating and ventialtion system of a high specification, which we are currently fundraising for. When this is installed, the building will be fully operational, and be able to live up to its potential as a community resource serving the whole region from Felling to Fenham and Wylam to Wallsend. We would welcome the chance to give you a guided tour of the building in its current state. Please do contact us if you would like to see the building in progress.
3. Who will be the beneficiaries?
The beneficiaries of this project fall into two categories the participants in the volunteer group that runs the cinema, and audiences. Ultimately, they will all only benefit when the building is complete. Participants and audiences will benefit from access to their own film culture, which is currently scarcely available in regional cinemas. They will benefit from the confidence of being in charge of their programme, rather than just being on the receiving end of a programme delivered for them. They will benefit from social cohesion through having a shared resource in which to invest their time and energy collectively. From an educational point of view, audiences will benefit from increased media literacy, through seeing different cultures represented on screen, and having the relaxed environment to discuss films afterwards. A broader educational programme is being developed by volunteers, particularly in running practical courses for the community in filmmaking, photography, and other media, building confidence and skills in people. Participants and audiences will benefit from the social experience of cinema, through the act of watching films together, but also the experience of organising the screenings and working together. Participants will benefit from on the job training. We will also seek training opportunities to further develop volunteers skills in working with hard to reach communities.
4. How much will this project cost?
The whole renovation cost prediction is £88,000. We have already aquired 65% of this total, through grants from Arts Council England North East (£18.5k), the Ouseburn Development Trust (£14k), Newcastle City Council (£1k), Akzo Nobel (£5k), our reserves (£5k) and in kind support from Baltic Centre for Contemporary Arts and many volunteers and small businesses totalling £16.4k.
We are approaching you for £xxx to match the funding we already have in place, which will further close the gap on our target.
We are also approaching the Arts Culture and Leisure Directorate at Newcastle City Council for a contribution of £22.5k, which would see us reach our goal. We are annually funded by Northern Film and Media, Arts Council North East and Newcastle City Council for operational costs. This application however falls into a separate category because it is for a capital project. 5. Need more information?
