Thurs 9 Oct - What next after climate camp? For a week in August, at a camp near Kingsnorth power station, climate activists worked together to live sustainably, learn new skills, and take direct action against the causes of climate change. What can we learn from this year's camp? It's clear that the North East could quickly become a massive focus in the current drive towards increased coal production. How can we work together locally and effectively to tackle the huge issue of climate change?

All are welcome to a public meeting and film night, where we'll discuss some of these questions, and watch films including footage of some of the action taken at the Climate Camp. Films include, Climate of Hope, Reclaim the Power and Cheat Neutral. glimpses@lists.riseup.net

Thurs 16 Oct - Peter Whitehead screening - Wholly Communion (1965) and The Fall (1969). Contemporary Films, Christo. DAYTIME HIRE: PARTICIPATORY VIDEO COURSE (DUNCAN FULLER, UNN)

“The brilliant work of Peter Lorrimer Whitehead, full of an incomparable energy, pulverises the false barriers between formal research, documentary reportage, psychedelic cinema, cinema engage, pop cinema and auteur cinema.“ Nicole Brenez: “The Exigency of Joy.”

Tonight we celebrate the 40th anniversary of 1968 (in spirit and action) through the work of underground British documentarist Peter Whitehead, with two films that share a vision while seeming to be wide apart in subject. Pink Floyd, London '66/ '67 documents Syd Barrett and the Floyd at their most imaginative, using experimental techniques which are considered to herald the music video (an accolade declined by Whitehead). The Fall, widely considered his masterpiece, blends engaged political cinema with the internal meanderings of the author, capturing in every way possible the spirit of the times, while focusing on the highly dramatic occupation of Columbia University by students protesting against the Vietnam War in 1968.
