Narrative is at the centre of much of his work, whether deconstructing it as in Scratch, or creating humorous and absurd situations to find existential meaning in the margins of modern life. La Ciénaga, (The Swamp), Lucrecia Martel, 2001, Argentina, 103mins, Spanish w/ English subtitles.
At the forefront of the Argentine New Wave, Martel makes narratively subtle films in which sound and image share an equal footing. 'La Cinéaga' tells the story of two families, one upper class and in decline, the other middle class and harried, and through them builds a devastating portrait of life in the Argentine provinces.

La Niña Santa, (The Holy Girl), Lucrecia Martel, 2004, Argentina, 106mins, Spanish w/ English subtitles.
Her captivating follow-up deals with the confusion between sexual awakening and religious fervour in an adolescent girl (Amalia), holidaying in a hotel hosting a medical conference for ear, nose and throat specialists. Sun 17 May - FILM SEASON: Kubrick - Killers Kiss 7.30pm
Kubrick intro
Stanley Kubrick universally hailed as a God-like Genius so it isn't really necessary to repeat that stuff. What, hopefully, is interesting about these early films is just how good he was without the lenses from NASA, obsessive preparation, unlimited budget etc. these are brilliant, entertaining stories really well directed.
Killers Kiss, 1955, S. Kubrick, 67mins
Kubrick's first feature (except it's not but never mind) is really great, written, directed, photographed and edited himself it just shows a kind of genius in gestation. It's an excellent noir thriller about a boxer and a dancer who get involved in each others lives.
- DIY Aye! would possibly like to do some workshops during the day, tbc. What time will the film be on to have everything tidy & shiny? faykalafati@yahoo.gr

"Simply one of the best thrillers of all times, the film was vilified at its release. Unrelenting in its depiction of a man on a downward spiral, it is the film the legendary director stated as his one “Pure Peckinpah”, made free from Studio interference. Visceral, doomed, deeply romantic. CULT."

Sun 24 May - FILM: KUBRICK : tHE kILLING
Killing, 1956, S. Kubrick, 85mins
We're still in noir-ish lowlife territory here but this time it's a heist film. A plan to steal $2m goes wrong because of a wife, her boyfriend and a dog. It's a very well crafted film both in terms of plot character and technique super entertaining and very tense.

Thurs 28 May - family films 4pm. FILM: KUBRICK - Paths of Glory 7.30pm
Paths of Glory, 1957, S Kubrick, 87mins
Conventional wisdom says this film is a masterpiece. For once you can trust conventional wisdom: Kubrick just has that special something without resorting to the lowest common denominator. Dont be turned of by it's WWI setting, it's an amazing piece of antiwar propaganda without any of the cliches you might expect.
