BOOKING INSTRUCTIONS
This Page is a working document that contains regular events and provisional bookings at Star and Shadow for the next two months.
Entering information for a date is provisional. ALL EVENTS NEED TO BE CONFIRMED AT A PROGRAMMING MEETING.
Provisional bookings must include your name and contact details - phone or email - or they will not be accepted.
The emphasis is on you as a programmer to attend a meeting, otherwise your event will not be confirmed. This applies for all bookings - made prior to and post brochure deadline. If you cannot attend a meeting (see dates below) please email the Programme Team: programme@lists.starandshadow.org.uk link: [1]
Events that have been confirmed will be indicated by a C and date of meeting.

Wed 3 Sept - Film - SILENT RUNNING - 1971, Colour 90mins, Universal, Dir Douglas Trumball, Starring Bruce Dern - Directing debut by special effects master Trumbull Silent Running is a downbeat, post-nuclear war fantasy in which a scientist refuses to destroy the remaining elements of organic life aboard his orbiting space greenhouse. 5 - 12 Sept Exhibition of "Eco-houses and Low Impact Developments: Experiments in environmentally friendly living" (mightydotalanattescodotnet). Text for brochure: "This exhibition of photographs, taken as part of a research project into anti-capitalist living, illustrates a range of homes designed to minimise their environmental impact. They are environmental in their construction, maintenance, and in the ways in which they are lived in. Many of them are also autonomous – operating with their own non-mains electricity and water supply, and with minimal visual impact. These experiments offer us small-scale solutions and inspiration for radically rethinking how we construct and live in our homes."
Sat 6 Sept - GIG: Urban & Eastern present: New Wired Folk; with Drag City recording artist and Will Oldham collaborator Alasdair Roberts, Emily Portman (back by overwhelming demand), Swedish electro-folk rounds from Nathalie Stern and Bridie Jackson, who has been described as the "new Karen Dalton". Inspired by the Carter Family, Moondog, Harry Partch and the Elliotts of Birtley, New Wired Folk is our fourth evening of challenging roots and folk musics. (Craig 07890 038336)

The second in our Woody-Allen-and-Mia-Farrow season. Zelig is a ‘mockmentary’ about personality, conformity, celebrity and love; shot and edited so perfectly! Leonard Zelig (Woody Allen) is a ‘human chameleon’, a man with an identity crisis. Mia Farrow plays his psychiatrist destined to follow him to the ends of the earth. Thurs 11 Sept - Film: 7.30pm. 'Broadway Danny Rose'. Dir: Woody Allen, 1984. USA. 81mins. Black & white, DVD The first of our not-so-commonly-seen-in-Woody-Allen-seasons season, Broadway Danny Rose is a tribute to the show-biz world of lounge entertainment.

Sun 14 Sept Star and Shadow Market, 11am - 4pm an arts crafts and flea market in the atrium and bar area. Independent designers, artists and second hand traders sell their wares.

Wed 17 Sept - FILM: Annalee Davis' On The Map ON THE MAP documents intimate discussions with un/documented people who tell stories of migration & life between the cracks. This thirty-two minute Video-DVD was shot on location in Barbados, Guyana and Trinidad. It examines current intra-regional migration with a focus on the Guyanese migrant experience into Barbados. It explores the views of the host country, exposes institutional abuse & demonstrates gaps between the official stand and the actual experience of unskilled Caribbean migrants. Prog notes: CENSORED A dance and visual art event addressing the problem of how to make decisions about what is appropriate to see or experience. Featuring work from regionally- and nationally-based artists, including Abby Austin, Jeremy Fay, Gillie Kleiman, and Robert Luzar.
Sat 20 Sept - GIG: Suzy Mangion; An Evening of Music and film. Suzy Mangion has been compared to Karen Carpenter, Vashti Bunyan and Joanna Newsom, and her music described as a "nocturnal lo-fi world of skeletal Victorian spookiness, wartime balladry and Appalachian folk". Tonight she combines her songs with defiantly oblique and rarely seen archive film from Patrick Keiller, Guy Maddin, Man Ray, Peter Greenaway and Georges Melies. (Craig 07890 038336)

- Film: 7.30pm. 'Radio Days'. Dir: Woody Allen, 1987. USA. 85mins. Colour, DVD The third in our Nostalgic-and-Sentimental-Woody-Allen season. Radio Days is a charming memoir of the bygone radio era. A working class family’s story is told along side the stories of the lives of those they listen to on the radio. Fri 26 Sept - 7pm Peak Oil! Tonight, the star of the film; 'How Cuba survived peak oil' comes to Newcastle all the way from Cuba. Roberto Perez (a permaculture activist, organic gardener) will present the issues facing Cuba in the 1990's and describe how it survived the oil shortage. The UK Peak Oil experts, Powerswitch, will join us too, for a discussion about the future of the UK as oil becomes scarce and expensive. Tea and cake to fuel us.
