Set in a post-apocalyptic future, in the lost city of Femphis "Superstarlet A.D." is a wild romp packed with the sex and violence of a classic exploitation film. Men have de-evolved into deadly Neanderthals and all women have banded into marauding rival beauty cults: the platinum blonde PhayRays, ruthless brunette Satanas and ill-tempered redheaded Tempests. TEXT FOR JUNE/JULY BROCHURE: "A silent documentary originally shown at British cinemas to huge audiences whilst the battle still raged in summer 1916. 7.30pm - Kiss Me Deadly as part of cult film season. "Kiss Me Deadly" 1955 Dir Robert Aldrich. Featuring Mickey Spillane's tough, narcissistic, neo-violent character Mike Hammer, this film is acclaimed as classic film noir which influenced the work of Lynch, Speilberg and Tarantino. The film is rich with symbolic allusions, labyrinthine and complex plot threads, and Cold War fear and nuclear paranoia about the atomic bomb. The film, shot over a one month period in late 1954, is a masterpiece of cinematography, exhibited in the disorienting camera angles and unique and unconventional compositions of Ernest Laszlo. It has all the elements of great film noir - a stark opening sequence, destructive femme fatales, low-life cheap gangsters, an anti-hero, expressionistically-lit night-time scenes, a vengeful quest, and a dark mood of hopelessness.

Mon 14 July - meeting only. Publicity & Programme meeting, 6pm

The other group, led by a soft-spoken African-American, operates "Phoenix Radio". They are stimulated into action after a political activist is arrested upon arriving in NYC and suspiciously dies while in police custody. (Craig 07890 038336)

Friday 18th July 200 Cantina Latina and ¡VAMOS! present a special night of visual art and film from 7pm, film screening from 8.30pm free entry with proceeds going to PBI Peace Brigades International)

An influential visual artist, Peter Kennard’s photo-montage
based practice has delivered some of the definitive images
of the time from the CND movement and (with relevance to
¡VAMOS!) his body of work on the General Pinochet’s coup
in Chile in 1973. Presented in the North East for the first time
in 30 years, this collection will be on show for one night within the Star and Shadow with Peter introducing the work.

Self taught photographer Jason P. Howe has worked in Lebanon, Iraq and is currently based in Afghanistan. A regular visitor to Latin America he has working in 18 countries in the region and documenting the ongoing conflict in Colombia has been a long term project. Jason’s exploration of FARC, the AUC (right wing militia), the displaced and coca trade is unnerving in it’s closeness to the subject. The first manifestation of this ongoing work ‘Colombia - Between the Lines’ will be presented at ¡VAMOS! as a unique installation with the just published book available to buy during the festival.

Castro relied heavily on the use of the visual medium (and in particular posters) to present and promote political themes, messages and philosophies to the masses. Cuba therefore has a striking and vibrant body of iconic imagery to explore in order to better understand the issues and agendas of the time. This strategy included the production of a children’s sticker album encouraging collecting and trading cards to learn about the revolutionary movement. On the night Dr.Barbara Willis-Clark will present samples from the sticker album in order to give a wider context to this unusual relic from Cuba’s past.

Colombian film maker Marc de Beaufort’s ‘The Private Archives of Pablo Escobar’ attempts to straddle both the pop and political with this revealing documentary portrait of a complex man who grew freakishly rich and powerful from the drug trade. Rising from petty criminal to fearsomely influential political mover and shaker, Escobar managed to simultaneously present himself as ruthless, violent criminal whilst knowingly cultivating a kind of modern day ‘Robin Hood’ persona. Film screened at 8.30pm.

Thurs 24 July - Funeral: Parade Of Roses (Bara No Soretsu, 1969, 107 mins, Toshio Matsumoto, Tokyo)Well known to have had a direct influence on Kubrick's career. Cross-dressing club-kid Eddie (played by real-life transvestite entertainer extraordinaire Peter, famed for his role as Kyoami the Fool in Akira Kurosawa's Ran) vies with a rival drag-queen Osamu Ogasawara for the attention of drug-dealing cabaret-manager Gonda (Yoshio Tsuchiya, himself a Kurosawa player who appeared in such films as Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood, and High and Low). Passions escalate and blood begins to flow — before all tensions are released in a jolting climax resembling Oedipus Rex, set within the seedy underbelly of 60's Tokyo.
