General info for the printed brochure
From The Star And Shadow Cinema Wiki
All the important info
As ever, we've got a packed programme of eclectic films, music and events. The main reason it's so good is 'cos we don't have any staff or bosses. Everyone involved is there of their own free will, which means our individual and collective creativity can let rip. We're only as good as the people involved – which includes you!
How we work
The cinema is built, maintained and run by people who want to be part of this creative place. People's involvement varies massively in terms of task and time, but the easiest way of finding out what you can help with is by joining the general volunteers list – send a blank email to volunteers-subscribe@lists.starandshadow.org.uk. At the core of the organisation are the Monday meetings at 6pm, at which everyone is very welcome. This month general open meetings are on 3rd and 17th; the Publicity Team meets on 10th and the Programme Team on 24th. To set our budget we use an open process pioneered in Brazil, called Participatory Budgeting. There is also a new Building Maintenance Team. Generally, if you see something that needs doing at this place, ask someone for help and get on with it!
Finding us
We are next to the Tanners pub & St Dominic's Church at the city centre end of the Byker Bridge. We are at the top of the streets called Stepney Bank and Crawhall Road in the Ouseburn area, where lots of the best pubs are. You can put NE1 2BB into multimap.com for a detailed map – or look on our website.
Getting to us
Manors Metro is 5 minutes walk away and the city centre about 10 minutes. We've got a cycle park inside. In Newcastle there are lots of buses: 12, 22, 39, 40, 62, 63. And from Gateshead or North Tyneside there are the 1 & 2. Ask for the Tanners or St Dominic's. There is limited car parking at the back. Just a stagger from our door is Riverside Taxis (0191 222 0222), who are open 24 hours.
Your Money
To enjoy an event at the Star & Shadow you need to be a member. This costs £1 for the year until the end of December. Events generally cost £4 or £3 for concessions. These charges are low so you don't have to be rich to experience an event.
Asylum
The Star & Shadow welcomes people seeking asylum, for whom there is no entry charge, but you do need to be a member.
Different abilities
The bar, cinema and toilets are all fully wheelchair accessible. As yet we don't have a hearing loop system (want to help us put one in?). We haven't had any signed films for deaf viewers yet – help is needed. For a large print version please call: 0191 261 0066. People familiar with many different languages can enjoy many parts of our programme. If we are not doing something in your language – please get involved and put something on! If you are skint, you can get in free to events by volunteering to work on the bar, door, projection booth or as an usher – but please sign up in advance. You can totally legally smoke tobacco outside our front door if you are over 18.
The Bar
Our friendly bar is open before, during and after screenings. All the drinks are made by local and/or small producers. It's also one of the cheapest bars in the city.
Hire us
The bar can be used as a venue for gigs and performances, as well as conferences, meetings, workshops, and socials. Broadly speaking the cost depends on your ability to pay. Give us a ring to talk it over if you are interested.
Audience or participant?
We show some just brilliant films that people often want to talk about. If you want to chat about what you've just seen, hang about next to the library in the corner of the bar after the film and chat it over. If you want to put on a film or event as part of the programme come along with your ideas to one of the regular Programme Team meetings on the fourth Monday of the month. The next deadline for text copy is 25 October for the December & January programme.
