Sun 6 Apr - Babette’s Feast 102 minutes, 1987 in Danish and French with English Subtitles

An elegant adaptation of Isak Dinesen’s short story which is a feast for the heart, the senses and the spirit. Set in 19th century Denmark in an isolated village, where two adult sisters live with their father. A French woman refugee, Babette, arrives at their door, begs them to take her in. In this deceptively simple film we are shown the attitudes and peculiarities of Babette, her employers, and the residents of the village as they all prepare for Babette’s Feast. No culinary experience could be as both amusing and perceptive as the meal served in this film: this isn’t just a dinner, it’s a revelation.

As part of one of the A Bit Crack and Star and Shadow Double Bill programme storyteller, Pascale Konyn chose this film for it’s delightful exploration of an intermingling of different cultures.

SPECIAL DOUBLE TICKET: £8 for this event and A Bit Crack Storytelling on Friday April 4th

If Babette's Feast unavailable, then screening of Red Road (see Thurs).

Fri 18 Apr - JACK SMITH night - documentary and other stuff. Christo

Jack Smith and the Destruction of Atlantis, Mary Jordan, USA, 2006, DVD, 94mins.

FAO Debbie: Rights cleared!

Text: Jack Smith was a true, wonderful underground artist, and his inspiration can be seen in Warhol, Fellini, John Waters and Nan Goldin to name but a few. Through a liberation from 'normal' (read conservative) narrative, style and representation, his classic 'Flaming Creatures' became a major free-speech issue in the USA, along with Burroughs' 'Naked Lunch' and Lenny Bruce's approach to comedy. Jordan's personal documentary acts as a homage to this great artist who's name is still ignored in art and cinema history. You are welcome to stick around afterwards and party if you are inspired by Jack's spirit.

Wed 23 Apr 7:30 Screening of "Proud Valley" by Tyne & Wear branch of Industrial Workers of the World. mightydotalanattescoldotnet. The Proud Valley, 1940, dir. Penrose Tennyson. "This is the one film that I can be proud of" said Paul Robeson of this film. Made on location in the Rhonnda Valley, documenting the realities of miner's lives,it gave him a rare opportunity to portray a convincing character, and to express his belief in the working class. Robeson plays David Goliath, a hobo from West Virginia who drifts into Wales on an empty coal truck looking for work. Class solidarity cuts across divisions of nationality and race as Goliath becomes part of the mining community, in a story which builds up to a dramatic and harrowing climax.

Sun 18 May -  : The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, Cert A, 35 mm format, 1943 Directed by Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger, duration 163 minutes. Patriotic romantic drama set in WWII Britain about the life of Clive Candy, elderly British army officer who believes that war is still fought with honour between gentlemen. Churchill tried to have the film surpressed due to its sympathetic portrayal of a German officer friend of Candy's, on the basis that it would make the British sympathetic to the Nazis at a time when the course of the war was yet undecided. The colour is admirable; the script, and its delivery by the actors, brilliant; and the English atmosphere of understatement well maintained throughout. Each individual part is carefully built up and the film as a whole repays the evident care which has been lavished upon it. [K Partington 0191 4879412]
