star and shadow meeting 9/06/08

Minutes present: Rebecca, Bill, Luke and Andrew (ex libris records) Marek, Dave, Simon, Adrian Stefanie. Richard.

Apologies from Lindsay Llana

Item 1 U.S.S.R. Mini festival. The need for a volunteer to cover Rebecca's absence at the event as she has been shadowing this event. This event is to be on the 25th and 26th of of July. Bill volunteered buddy this event

Item 2 Regarding vacant film slots in September A Woody Allen mini season is to be screened rather than Billy Wilder as there is a conflict with the Tyneside Cinema's programming

Item 3 volunteers needed for program distribution as there seems to be dissatisfaction with the current arrangements.

Item 4 Ex libris records expressed a desire to stage an Album launch on the 26th July 08 and to this end had booked this slot quite recently on the Wiki. somehow there has been a mixup as this slot os already booked for the U.S.S.R. Mini festival. therer werer no suitable alternative slots for the launch but Luke and Andrew still want to put gigs on in collaboration with the S&S and will aim for September as a start via the wiki with Stefanie shadowing them.

Item 5 The issue was raised as to what happened to the Gig contract and it was explained that there were too many stipulations that were not adhered to and had hence been abandoned. It was felt that any kind of agreement was better than no agreement. Rebecca volunteered to draft up a friendly agreement based on the star and shadow's expectations from and to a promoter In time for the Lo-fi gig on Thursday

Item 6 The issue of Pauline's imminent departure and who will reply to the 'Gigs' email inbox (currently experiencing difficulties) as a temporary solution Simon will redirect the emails into the general info inbox to be dealt with by whoever can until as replacement for Pauline materialises

Item 7 Dave from Jazz N.E. popped in to the Cinema in the hope of securing 13th November as a date for a free Improv Gig featuring U.S. Jazzer Ken Vandermark and a U.K rhythm section (in collaboration with Birmingham Jazz) based on the success of his previous star and shadow event. as this is a Thursday and should be a film night he will look at alternative venues but the date will be referred to programming for a final decision. Dave is still keen to promoter at the S&S on the back of discussions a suggestion of free jazz and improv night to be sheduled possibly featuring Jazz films was mooted

Item 8 New ideas: Adrian suggested themes are helpful in attracting an audience and maximising promo effectiveness. Maybe around Nov/Dec a themed series maybe over a month featuring Westerns for instance. Richard Suggested featuring S.E. Asian Films. There are a number of free slots over these two months but they are not consecutive. Genre suggestions are requested T.B.C.by programming

Item 9 suggestions for the anniversary of 9/11 are requested. Godzilla, Cloverfield 'The Power of Nightmares' 4 part series were all mooted

item 10 Primary School visit to view cinema on 19th June confirmed for 1.30 pm Lindsay and Hannah will take care of this item as it precedes and is connected with the Family films event on the same date. Lindsay needs to email details regarding all of the Family film events for the programme

Item 11 Marek has requested the free slot on 25th September to show Favela Rising, a Film featuring 'Afro reggae' a band that have reached international status that were formed following the massacre of 21 residents of the Brasilian favelas by the police. This will form part of the lead a weekend of workshops with members of the band around the city.

Any other business There are logistical problems with posters that need to be addressed i.e. who puts them up. Richard requested that films potentially be shown for longer as he feels that it helps to build audience and often desirable films are missed. The idea of S&S as a second run cinema for choice films was received well.

apologies for typos and name mispellings i hope this covers it and is clear enough

Marek
