31 March programme meeting
From The Star And Shadow Cinema Wiki
Present: Holly, Craig, Stephanie, David, Peter, Ele, Pauline, Gillie, Liz, Haz, Phipps, Adrin, Bill, Becca, Ian, Flemo, Debbie
Gigs: Ian came along. He previously ran a Nick Cave night and would like to do another night in September. There were several problems the last time these guys did an event here - including stolen art work and lack of a person on the door.
If they did do another gig here it would need to be a lot more organised on both sides. Night has been pencilled in for October 4 2008.
Pauline will send Ian the new terms and conditions.
Gig help: Pauline would like more help with the gigs, until May when she stands down. It's mainly admin and chasing money etc. Haz says there has been an email from a volunteer saying they'd like to help with admin. ACTION: Haz will forward these details to Pauline. ACTION: Craig will put Pauline in touch with Jenny Dewar who will help out too.
New ideas: Ele would like to programme a film called She Could Have Gone to the Moon about the women who were trained for the US space programme but didn't end up going.
Is there any money left from ACE that could pay the film-maker for coming up?
Adrin would like to run a Fred Wiseman season during November but it would only be on Sunday's, so Thursdays would still be available.
Craig suggested that we could have a Dragon's Den kind of event at the S+S with people being able to put their pitches to funders and get advice on their pitches. The idea was shot down in flames of negativity.
The Forest Cafe in Edinburgh give a £100 per month to a project that they like - people can pitch for things they want to fund. Nobody had any further comment on how this might work.
Gillie would like to do a performance event - it's somewhere between a performance and an exhibition. The performers are part of the audience and disrupt the spectatorship. Would like to do the piece in the exhibition space. Theme might be to do with 'censorship'. Would like to do something in September - the 19th is free and Ele will buddy up with Gillie.
Haz would like to propose an 'early years festival' 0-5 year olds! Could she take a week in August next year 2009. Theatre, film, workshops. Round table events in the evening. Adrin suggested that the first week in August should be a building festival - that this should be a yearly thing. Haz thinks that the last week in August would be the best time to do it - and this could possibly bring in some money rent wise.
Debbie thought that it should be in a week that things were normally open. Haz would like to do it during the holidays.
Ele suggested a film about Inuit Breast Feeding and the meeting experienced a Posy Simmonds moment.
Adrin is keen to do a Fred Wiseman season in November. Fred Wiseman is a documentary film maker who makes political films about America that are rarely seen. One of these films is called A FUTURE WAR and this could be shown on Remembrance Day. There is also a film that could be shown that related to the US Election around that time.
January 2009 - Adrin would like to show films by Danny Lyons - did photo books about Hells Angels and on Death Row. Would be the type of film maker that would go down well here. Lyons was a hippy radical in the sixties and is very political.
Craig suggested that we might be able to get an academic to contextualise it. He will pass on details of Roxy Bramley to Adrin in case he wants to apply for funding.
Flemo suggested an all-nighter with the US election results coming in. Craig said that US elections had the habit of stretching on a little bit too long.
Stephanie asked how much do we ask for using the space - i.e. VAMOS - one on a Friday night and one on a Sunday afternoon. There was discussion about how much the place takes to run - the possibility is for us to develop a grid of pricing. For instance a Saturday night would cost more than a Wednesday evening - it would also be tariffed for 12 hours rather than a four hour slot.
A concession system could be tied into this - i.e. for people who do a lot of work here.
Becca suggested that the issue of pricing be put on the agenda at the General Meeting. Hazz and Ilana are doing this kind of work too and the meeting asked them to bring their work to a meeting as soon as they were ready.
The meeting suggested to Stephanie that VAMOS not be given a cut-price deal as they would probably be funded for their venue hire.
Debbie will coordinate and design the new programme.
