28 April programme meeting
From The Star And Shadow Cinema Wiki
Facilitated by Adrin Minutes taken by Malamo and then Mat later on.
Present: Bill, Stephanie, john, matt, Malamo, Sam, Evete, Robin, Phips, Haz, Ken, Colin, Adrin, Stewart
New ideas/projects (and some digressions)
John- to put on Swedish film "the ninja mission" Discussion evolved around whether the film is interesting/fun and whether people would come to see it. Matt suggested to have a regular slot/night dedicated to freaky/cult/crazy films. Actions: John to contact Debbie to check about slot on the wiki. Stephanie to contact Jennifer to ask whether she would be interested to programme that.
General point raised about S&S being able to accommodate different interests and different audiences (age groups). Point was raised that this is our capacity as volunteers, and anyone who want to put films on should do so.
Sound levels- complaint from neighbors: suggestion to try to talk to people about their complaint or get a noise meter so there is a limit to volume. Decision to have a handheld meter so we can take measurements more accurately. Suggestion from Matt to insulate (add a layer of plasterboard) the room, mainly ceiling, coz late licenses will always create trouble. People agree, but not enough man power to do it. Also problem being open doors- suggestion to have a policy for this. To be put forwards to the meeting: until what time?
Castersugar and Backlash: 1.30am bar (music off 2am, people out for
2.30am)
Backlash to confirm if 2.30am is ok. Backlash to email Ilana. Rimini:
Posters on the door programmers need to help getting images together for putting pictures together for posters which he's going to get back on the case for posting on the door.
Prison films will be happening. A day of films and talks about issues relating to prisons and imprisonment. Is happening one Sunday in June (when?) Malamo is still open to ideas but the whole thing is being well organized, No borders collective folk etc. This project is still open to ideas , particularly with regards films relating to the UK.
Sam and Yvette from Cluney- seeing whether S&S wants to be involved in their opening exhibition at the Cluney Gallery on the 25th August.. They would like us to select artists' for a screen in the back room. They will send an email to ss@gmail to be forwarded to programming team in case a programmer would like to take this on.
Robin-Cooperative film festival needs to be resurrected.
It would be a day (or 2) about cooperatives and The Coop (it has a
film archive), the Spanish model which exists in the Basque Country in
which whole towns are run cooperatively. Bill has an interest as does
Haz and Mat. These 4 will meet up soon to organize it. Thuirsday the
8th 1 o'clock at the Cinema. All welcome. Bring sandwiches to share
for cooperative experience.
Colin has written an email to us before asking for help making a film. He wants to get a crew together that would be like a film collective taking crew roles and making films together. SS has space and equipment and Film Bee already. We can help with putting up posters for him to run with the project.
Issues from last 2 weeks
Box Office returns. Once again we are experiencing problems with distributors because of our not making box office returns. We need to get onto this. Adrin proposes the film booker is responsible. Also that the Box Office volunteer lakes records of numbers of people in and the amount of cash taken. Haz took responsibility for highlighting what needs to be done in the box office and keeping the forms full.
Fred Wiseman season …has been sponsored by NFM to the tune of 750 quid. Adrin is looking for ideas for speakers for a seminar and also for actual films.
Building festival-grant from James Knott Foundation Someone at the foundation gave Haz the impression that they would be interested in providing a grant. We need to make a budget. Haz does not feel informed enough to decide on this. Perhaps we need to form a group. John, Mat and Ken offered help on this. A meeting will be called early next week.
Matt Foster and plans for building He is apparently very close, perhaps 5 months, to purchasing the building for 1.7m quid. How do we feel about it? Can we do anything about it? Can Dale Ouseburn trust help? What is Matt Forster expecting of us? Has anybody got the energy to pursue buying the building for ourselves?
Family screenings We need to find a way to publicize what's happening here on the boards in St. Annes. Stephanie volunteered to make an A4 sheet diary for this.
Ceilidh on Friday and respect It was a good night but it seemed as though threre were a lot of people who did not understand this place and that they have to be kind to the venue and volunteers. Perhaps some signage. Haz want to make a big sign which somehow expresses that we are volunteers etc. We discussed how we should be treating patrons and how volunteers should be treated. Respect all round – do we deserve more respect for being volunteers?? Should we treat customers the same as a regular business??
Wednesday night-Phipps Kraut Rock night. Phipps and Craig needs help with PA, projection.
Meeting closed at 8:25
