23 June Programme Meeting
From The Star And Shadow Cinema Wiki
Star and Shadow Cinema Programming/Publicity Meeting 23 June 2008
Attending: Adrin, Matt, Holly, Vik (Gem Arts), Oscar (North East Cultural Diversity Arts Forum), three representatives from Northern Pride (sorry, didn’t catch names!), Hannah, David (painter), Phipps, Gillie, Stéphanie, John and Dan (comics), Ilana, Luke and Andrew (gig promoters, ex-libris records), Rose, Malcolm.
Matters arising: • Hannah wished to point out the positive aspects of the recent Backlash event, for which she was keyholding, in response to last week’s negative comments.
• This led to a discussion of how S&S volunteers could be identified behind the bar, in order to avoid confusion in future. Possible options: T-shirts or aprons (generally unwanted due to resonances of a formal uniform), badges. Possibly to be undertaken during the building festival??
• Caster Sugar Disco: Debbora from Caster Sugar has enquired as to whether the negative discussion in last meeting’s minutes are in relation to the CSD event. Matt will email Debbora to reassure her.
Clarifications of events already programmed: • Northern Pride event in July – door costs will cover costs of films, with any profit going to S&S
• Luke and Andrew’s gig/launch event – confirmed
New Pitches • Vik from Gem Arts – 4 film nights as part of the Gem Arts festival, with Tibetan/Himalyan theme. Dates proposed: 8th, 9th, 11th, 12th October. Vik will provide some volunteers, who will attend the September induction. Gem Arts will contribute £100 per day, and will work out ticket prices. Vik will also consider issues around audience expectations and the S&S venue (car park, cleanliness, etc.). Stéphanie offered to assist Vik alongside Gem Arts partner MunMun from the Pakistan Cultural Society. Vik made aware of publicity deadline. • Oscar Watson from NECDAF – pitched a biennial review of regionally-based BME filmmakers’ work. The same films will be shown at the Arc in Stockton. Four nights proposed: 23rd Oct, 30th Oct, 20th Nov, 27th Nov. NECDAF will arrange for some volunteers, and can contribute some funds towards S&S. Adrin will buddy up with Oscar. Oscar made aware of publicity deadline. • David – wishes to exhibit paintings in gallery area. David was made aware of un-invigilated space, need to contribute to cinema, and need for swift cleaning up. David wished to launch on the first Thursday of the month (Cinema of the World night), in order to capitalise from the Artworks’s audience – not possible? David will speak to Artworks manager to ensure no misunderstandings. Wednesday 1st October was proposed instead. • Dan and John – want to hold monthly comedy night on a Sunday. Were advised Sunday is film night only. Concerns raised regarding monthly nature of the event. Will arrange possible dates with Stéphanie via email. • Malcolm – wants to show Greenpeace short film(s), possibly with a discussion. Holly to buddy up with Malcolm to develop event. • Hannah – No Borders network meeting – possible full weekend of activities. A date needs to be found, but unconfirmed events are making this difficult. Hannah to check with organisers of these events and return with a date.
Other things • Programme deadline for September reiterated: 25th July. October deadline 25th Aug? To be checked. Designers to be identified. • Consensus not to go through last programming meeting’s minutes • Ilana – as she is going away other keyholders will need to take responsibility for ensuring there is sufficient change in the safe. • Holly – confession! Pakistani film not to be shown at the next Cinema of the World – replacement to be shown. • The suggested “future of Star and Shadow” meeting (5th Monday) to be cancelled.
