General Meeting18 Feb 2008

Present: Bill, Craig, Ilana, Debbie, Matt, Adrin, Chris (A Bit Crack), Jane, Alan, Christo, Bethany, Olga, Arto.

Chair: Craig

Taking notes: Stephanie

I) Issues from last 2 weeks

1) Chris – light

More work needs to be done

Bill said he spoke to Kevin

Chris wants to follow it up with kevin. Chris will call Kevin about light to push things along. James has stuff to use.

Chris says it is possible to get chairs from au auction every Thrsday.

Chris talks about the bell that is too loud when events are on. He would like to have a flashing light rather than sound.

Ilana says it needs to be inctalled.

Debbie suggests to put somebody on the door the whole night.

Mat says you can hack it so that it is flashing.

Craig suggests to talk about this offline.

2) Craig – Tyneside Socialist Forum

He says that for the film in the evening on Sun 10 Feb, there were 2 customers and the director had come to present his film. No promotion had been done at all by the Tyneside Socialist Forum and they did not stay for the film.

Bill says that for his play there was a good audience and response from the audience despite the odds.

3) Mat says a second bike has been nicked the previous day (Sun 17 Feb). He says we need to tell people to lock their bikes: make a bigger sign above the bikes – Chris says he will make a sign.

Alan says that to have somebody on the door the whole time is good to avoid this kind of things.

II) BAR

1) Ilana says the price of the lager has gone up so we need to increase the price for the customers as well. The question is: should it be £1.90 (to give change is annoying but we would respect our policy of selling stuff for twice the price of purchase) or £2 (so that it is easier for the change).

Alan/Phips: say it should be £1.90

Christo says it is not more annoying to give 10p back than 20p

Craig/Debbie suggest we have a BI calculator at the bar

Consensus decision: go for the lager at £1.90

2) the end of the bar (flap) is built – there are 2 flaps, they just need to be installed. Mat says he might be about to help.

3) Alan says that Alan/Ilana/Haz are responsible for specific drinks to be ordered – they have left list and contact details on the door at the bar, we can call them when we need drinks.

4) The environmental health woman came at the bar. She said that we would need to repair the ceiling if we wanted food. We should also do other things: block gaps…

Ilana says that in any case (whether we sell food or not) we have to register as a food business, but then we will be inspected every 2 years.

Ilana and Debbie cleaned for 2 days before the health woman came – WE SHOULD TRY AND MAINTAIN IT BECAUSE IT IS A LOT OF WORK TO CLEAN.

THANK YOU A MILLION DEBBIE AND ILANA – you are our cleaning wonderwomen.

5) Coffee machine: Alana says it would cost £55 to fix it – shall we go for it?

Bill says we should get rid of it.

Ilana: we would have a drainage issue with the machine

Mat says: it is a pain at the moment if somebody asks for a coffee, it takes ages.

Alan says there is a problem with the space. If we have to choose between a coffee machine or a kitchen, he would go for the kitchen.

Christo proposes to sell it on ebay with details of parts missing – THE BAR TEAM WILL DO THAT.

III) Building issues

1) Debbie is repainting the boys toilet walls. If anybody wants to join her to help paint, it would be welcome.

2) Christo: he suggests to have another building festival on the 1st week of August – cook in the afternoon, get material, make furniture.

Debbie says we should improve the front door

Alan says: it is good to have a building festival, but we should be careful to involve people who are already participating to the SS, not only newcomers.

Conversation suddenly sidetracked onto the AUGUST discussion – shall we open? Are we open?

Even if we close, we need to do things so that September is not a mess.

Chris asks – is it ok to still have a bit crack night on 1st fri of the month? – YES AGREED

Ilana says it is good to have nothing – Stephanie and Alan agree, Alan says we all need rest.

Phips ask if we could just have less events?

CONSENSUS DECISION: HAVE NO EVENTS AT ALL IN AUGUST.

IV) Money issues

Ilana says she has put together a cashing up book and a petty cash book.

Christo suggests an account with Riverside Taxis.

Ilana says she would be afraid the taxis don’t overcharge. She says we’ll look into it.

Ilana talks about new bag system.

WE ALL THINK IT’S GREAT THANK YOU ILANA!

V) Programming

Deadline is 20th Feb!!

EVENT SUGGESTION

1) Bethany from Dancecity

She suggests a dance event with film to take place in April.

She will buddy with Mat to organise things.

2) Olga – Russian events

We all suggest she comes to the nest induction session.

VI) Publicity issues

March listing: Christo sent it to the crack

Suggestion: Craig says that we should add the Star and Shadow logo at the bottom of each poster.

VII) New Ideas

1) Stephanie talks about Raul from Dancecity who said he was open to suggestions about a big weekend he is organising on 24 May during which he will have the whole building of danceCity to himself.

2) Debbie asks if it is ok to have a Queerbeat event on a Tue.

We debate about the Tue thing: shall we ALWAYS close on Weds if we have an event on Tue? Debbie says we should because it is too much work. Other people disagree. Nothing is really agreed on the Tue question.
