16 April programme meeting
From The Star And Shadow Cinema Wiki
Here: Steph, Adrin, Bill, Pauline, Phipps, John, Eilish, Haz, Chris, John, Vicky, Mike, Dorota, Craig
No matters arising from last meeting's minutes. However, ACTION: Haz will send em to the S&S email!
New ideas - Adrin expanded on his idea for a Fred Wiseman season. He is applying for funding from NFM with a special focus on publicity. Any suggestions for particular Wiseman films are welcomed. Adrin would very much like to show State Legislature and Missile.
Woodcraft Folk - Eilish talked about a fundraiser for an educational NGO just outside Cape Town that she would like to use the S&S for. It's provisionally booked on the wiki for Weds May 21st. ACTION: Eilish will guarantee vols for it and they will come to the May induction as well as doing at least one shift.
White Steele Photography - suggested a photography exhibition to be shown in June. Ilana explained a bit about how S&S is trying to move away from direct 'hires' of the building where people are more involved rather than just paying a fee. ACTION: the group will check the wiki and see if there is a suitable date and think a bit more about expectations and involvement.
Mike's - Mike is keen to hold a folk night at the S&S. He would like for it to be weekly. Meeting explained that a weekly night would be problematic and suggested a few other venues.
Dorota would like to have another Polish night. There are some dates in May free. ACTION: Ilana will be a contact for Dorota.
Steph talked to the meeting about having a No-Fi gig (Sunburned Hand of the Man) on a film night. The meeting acquiesced. Ilana reminded meeting that Lee does great stuff in Newc! Ilana also suggested centralising gig info on email.
Steph brought up the issue of programming for the next brochure. WHAT DO PEOPLE WANT TO SEE???!!! Is another season a good idea? There are some cult films already programmed by Jennifer. Craig had a suggestion of a Blaxploitation movie (Black Gestapo), Pauline suggested Kiss Me Deadly, Steph suggested Evil Dead, Haz suggested Twin Peaks all-nighter, Phipps suggested Silent Running. Adrin suggested The Last Movie. Steph suggested Eraserhead. A cult season seems to be forming. ACTION: Respective people are going to look into rights. An email will go round the Programming list. Steph to coordinate.
Private Hires Pauline spoke about how onerous the gig coordination was. She talked about how increasingly difficult private hires were becoming. She proposed that we no longer work in the same way in terms of nightly private hires and that people who want to put on events at the S&S have to volunteer and get involved before they can put on a night. We maybe keep a bar minimum but the deposits essentially go out the window and thus Pauline's 'keeping up with people' is not needed. Phew. Ilana spoke about how this would be a positive way forward as it would really mean that the people involved would be creating their own culture, on their own terms. We would be working with not for people. Eeek it's a bit cliche. But it is what's meant. Pauline added that if a fantastic idea is put to the cinema then she will put it around the vols list to see if anyone wants to take it on and it can go ahead in that way. ACTION: a good way of communicating this would be to make it a page on the website. Ilana to look into this. Haz to help. Over the next two weeks.
Vicky raised the point of people perhaps not being able to volunteer enough to satisfy the S&S. Also, would the cinema make enough money? Pauline is confident that there are only about two private hires a month and that the loss of them would not be too much, event or money wise.
WIKI The meeting looked through the wiki at the June/July programme. There seem to be quite a number of free nights. Lots of these could be film nights. Yip yippee. There are some late licenses question marks. ACTION: Haz will contact relevant people. What's happening with the Summer Festival????
Shifts - question mark over projection on some nights and tech support (!) for Haz on Weds. Steph to email out for vols for other nights.
Haz conveyed Holly's suggestion of a green festival meeting next Monday (22nd) in the Tanners at 8.30pm as we need to discuss what our involvement will be.
The meeting sloped off at 9pm ish.
