Summer festival 08 ideas
From The Star And Shadow Cinema Wiki
Following last years very excellent Beach Film Festival that was part of the Summertyne Festival, what could we do this year? The time period we would be looking at would be the end of July.
Last year the foyer space was transformed into a tropical, beach themed dream with elaborate props made by a few folk and led by Mick Davies and David Beech. We had great films.. Puberty Blues, Big wednesday... lots of cocktails... Once we have a decent amount of suggestions we can bring all this forward to a programming meeting to see if everyone is happy to do this again.
The last one was funded as part of the Summertyne festival so it didn't cost us to run it. So we need to think of this aspect too as it will not necessarily be like that this year.
Any ideas on a theme that could fit for this year?
how about this for june or july? and maybe in july make the hallway into a bit of a big top and do some circus things?
THE WORLD FAMOUS STAR AND SHADOW CIRCUS FILM FESTIVAL
Obviously Mat has a ton of good ideas, but i know that ARTIST AT THE TOP OF TH BIG TOP, WORRIED by Alexander Kluge is available from BFI and would Love to see it.
The there is he who gets slapped again, circus of horrors, freaks, la strada, jumbo, the greatest show on earth etc.
how about around 11,12,13 july?
WE LOVE THE CIRCUS IDEA!
andy and sarah and iain pate write:
make a big top from the white blackout fabric currently available from sarah and AV festival (because it's fireproof and you could paint red stripes on it)
be sure to find some bearded ladies and strong men in lyotards and clowns with cars that fall apart.
organise pony rides with the stepney bank stables?
if it coincides with the hoppings fair, even better, check the date?
Last year's Hoppings was 22nd june til 20th june - maybe we could do it on the last weekend of june into the first week of july. Keith has booked in a provisional commemoration of the B attle of the Sommme for 1 july, but rimini is on the saturday 5th, which could be a great way to end the festival...
Lola Montez, La Strada, the Face (AKA the Magician) there is also something Ihaven't seen called Killer Klowns form Outer Space -adrin
Ps... check out "Freaked" for baroque circus insanity ;-)
Thanks,
Jenni
I also know of a great documentary about an a queer community circus troupe in New York and Coney Island that i could track down. - julie
We could maybe try to get some cash off a local ward or east end arts thing, if we do some circus skills workshops and things like that - holly knows some people called bare toed who do workshops in trapeze and stuff. would be good to make it as far out as possible.
What if everyone interested in doing this Star and Shadow Big Top Festival idea form a working group? It will take a lot of effort to make this festival, when we did the festival last summer people started meeting seperately to organise it. Just a matter of fixing the first meet up and emailing the volunteer list to let them know about it.
