Requirements for brochure design
From The Star And Shadow Cinema Wiki
A few must haves for the designer of a Star and Shadow Cinema
1. The brochure needs to actually state Star and Shadow Cinema on the cover as well as the months it is for. The name should go at the top of the page so it can be seen when in publicity display racks.
2. The brochure needs to have the cinema's funders logo's in the brochure. This is Newcastle City Council and NFM at the moment.
3. It is important that the text is in a big enough font to be read easily. At the moment we have been using Helvetica font at size 9. Helvetica is easily readable at this size - if you chose another font you may need to consider a different font size.
4. The brochure needs to be designed to be just ONE colour. You can design in Black and white and then tell the printers what colour ink you want.
5. When designing you need to leave a 4mm bleed over the page size. At the moment our page size is A3 - 420MM X 297MM (so add bleed on top of this measurement). This bleed is important - otherwise the colours will not necessarily go to the edge of the cut. You also need to make sure that the text is not too close to the 420 x 297mm boundary. I tend to leave a 5mm margin for text within this on all sides.
5. The brochure is predominately made at Tyneside Free Press, Charlotte Square, Newcastle unless agreed differently at a meeting before hand. We use this printers as they are a workers co-op and we like the quality of their print and they are very nice!
6. It is preferable that the order of the events make sense in some way: either chronological or grouped (ie. gigs, films, seasons...) or chronological and partially grouped (eg chronologigal - but the film season is grouped)!
7. Events do better when their brochure entry has a picture (though not all the programmers have the sense to send one with their text or have an available image). You will be given images but do feel free to find extras too.
8. The brochure must have a diary on the back of it listing all events.
9. there needs to be an info page that has all the details and also has in a large font the following ****please call 0191 261 0066 for large print version******* I will email you the info page text.
THE MASSES PET HATES
This is a list of things that I have heard volunteers moan about numerous times at old cinema meetings about the brochure and is the impetous for most of the guidance above!
-Squashed text and info when there is a lot of space wasted on unrelated artwork. -Too small text. -erratic ordering of stuff -lack of care over highlighting the films seasons. - if something looks too unlike the star and shadow - eg way too slick or something. I'm thinking ultra hetero male graphic students here. plus many other things I have wiped from my memory.
BUT DON'T FEEL YOU HAVE TO...
-be too conservative, - follow the previous art styles in any way (though we do like a consistant format and fold at the mo, UNLESS you have a better idea which we may prefer! we like to evolve, honest!) - use the same type of header lettering - there is no strict 'star and shadow font' it just happened by accident these last few brochures. Though if you want to use it do. - make something you hate! As long as its clear and readable and makes us look good we'll love it!
