RESOURCES
1.) Joanne sent some examples of similar organisations around the country that may be able to provide some ideas/ inspiration for the future of S&S:
Wotton under edge eclectic picture house http://209.85.229.132/search?q=cache:yjtzQ7ACY58J:www.ukvillages.co.uk/gmtf.nsf/3d1512f647e67819802571bc0040c35b/%24FILE/SWMTA%2520PressRelease008.pdf+mcti+cinema+gloucestershire&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=16&gl=uk
East Street Arts in Leeds, see website www.esaweb.org.uk They own a managed workspace for the creative industries - their focus is entirely on the development of the creative industries across Leeds, not the regeneration of a community.
Burslem School of Art Trust, the building is on lease from the Council. Originally set up in partnership with a DTA member trust (Burslem CDT) it is now independent and has been self sustaining since it opened following refurbishment in 2000 . The Manager, Cath Ralph, has been working with Moseley CDT on developing their building. Visit the website www.schoolofart.co.uk
Out of the Blue, a development trust in Edinburgh may be worth looking at – a big old barracks building they have converted for multiple arts use, including lots of little box studios wrapped in Cumbrian sheep wool as insulation! http://www.outoftheblue.org.uk/
2.) Alan sent a link for the Asset Transfer Unit(http://www.atu.org.uk/) which includes the example of a cultural venue. "Basically it us about helping community and voluntary groups take overcouncil buildings and land. This might be something the council could consider. And something theOuseburn Trust should know about."
IDEAS
1. Questionnaire
At last meeting we said we would make a questionnaire to have online and on paper that asked questions about how people feel about moving.
Possible questions:
- how much is staying here, in the this building, in the ouseburn, worth to you?
- where would you like us to move, if we had to? and why? be specific!
- what things would you like to stay the same or change if we have to move? be specific!
- if we move should we move into a) a raw space and have another building festival, b) a mostly ready-to-go space and modify it, or c) move into a space we have built to our specs?
- what will you do to help us?
also - dig out that old questionnaire that went out in the Side/S+S transition time for reference
distribution of the questionnaire? timeframe?
2. Possible other venues
- West End: Blandford square? arts council funding interests there.
- West End: the old newcastle council building on Avison Street off Stanhope? it has a park out front for outdoor films projected on to the building!
- West End: the old department store on west clayton street
- West End: the Plaza on West Road - (formerly Wetherspoons)
- West End: former Fire Station on West Road
3. Interim plans so we don't go dark and so we maintain cash flow
- partner with another cinema/venue to do once-a-week events. issues: hire fee? ticket taking proceeds? bar proceeds? possible venues: tyneside cinema, Gateshead old town hall, discovery museum great hall, side cinema...
- monthly fundraiser events, each at a different venue?
- go on the road beyond newcastle?
